A Letter to Posterity

Hello there folks!

I hope this new week finds you all well. Now I am on day 5 of my 30 day workshop and so far I am finding it very interesting. I am slightly concerned that some of my writing is rather short. Although, I suppose part of that has to do with the fact that the prompts are not of my choosing. Today the prompt asks if I had one week to live what would I say in my final piece of writing.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Lets see. How should I begin? I suppose I could begin in the words of Whitman, “you will hardly know who I am, or what I mean, but I shall be of good health to you”. Although, perhaps a simple hello will suffice. At this point who I am is not nearly as important as what I am. The life I have lived has been largely unremarkable, but by my action now I become a part of the collective human voice travelling through space and time to help shape and guide what will be for any who care to listen.

In life it is far too easy to feel alone and unloved, and even as technology can connect us in ways never thought possible it can also leave us isolated. The truth of the matter is that you are never alone. There exist countless voices calling out to you from beyond the veil of eternity. The hopes and fears of millions of souls laid bare to you, if for no other reason than you live in a world of their making. They comfort and inspire you through works of music, literature, and art; because they love you.

I discovered this voice, because, I was a student of history so I purposely sought out the knowledge. Evidence of this truth exists all around you. Every facet of the world around you has been put into place as the result of one action or another. While some of these may have been accidental discoveries the fact that they are left behind is very purposeful. The world was shaped by people thinking of you and I know this to be true, because within you exists the validation for everything that has come before.

The conceit of the human condition is to believe that you are living for yourself. In fact, you are a by product of those who came before, and all you can ever become is an example or a guide for those who come after. In the grand scheme of things a single life if fleeting, but, within that blink of an eye a legacy can be established that will last millennia.

Furthermore, the concept of self is misleading, as we are each just one part of a greater whole. By our very existence we leave a ripple in the pond that is humanity. I need not elaborate on the truth of causation, but I would like to point out that you are an agent in this timeless dance regardless of choice or knowledge of such. Your impact can be far more meaningful if you are acting from a position of knowledge, but you will have an impact never the less.

It is my most sincere hope that my voice finds you in good health and spirit, but even in your darkest times allow me to reassure you. I love you, I believe in you, and you are not alone. Everything I have done has been for you, because you are the agent by which all future change is possible. Stand on our shoulders so that you may reach to the heights of which we only dreamed.
